The local Sweet Dreams Winery, owned by Sandra and Mike Pell, recently won two medals for their wines at the prestigious Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in Finger Lakes, N.Y.

The competition featured 3,200 wines from 22 countries and all 50 states as well as six Canadian provinces. There were 64 judges from 15 countries.

Sweet Dreams Winery won a silver medal for its Blue Moon blueberry wine and a bronze medal for its Outlaw Red wine.

Sweet Dreams Winery has collected more than 22 awards in it 5 1/2 years in business. The local winery has won Taste of Palestine Best Winery three years in a row. It also won the Montgomery Wine Festival’s first place People’s Choice Award for its Midnight in Texas wine — this was out of 20 wineries with two wines each.

“Midnight in Texas is blended with lots of fresh blackberries, blueberries and mustang grapes,” Mike Pell said.

“It also is a delicious dinner wine that goes well with steaks, Italian food, pasta, hearty soups, etc.,” Sandra Pell said.

Mike Pell uses all stainless steel equipment to create their wines. They do not use wood chips or wood barrels.

The blueberry Blue Moon is made from fresh frozen blueberries from Montalba Blueberry Farm. It takes about 400 pounds of the fruit to make 100 gallons of wine. Almost all of their wines use fresh frozen fruits from all over East Texas. The Outlaw Red wine is made from Texas mustang grapes and a Norton grape and works well as a dinner wine.

Sweet Dreams Winery has more than 15 kinds of wine currently in stock. Some flavors are sold out of as the winery depends on Mother Nature to get its fruits for the year to come.

Any farmer with fruits to sell, please call Mike Pell at 903-549-2027.

“He is especially looking for someone selling blackberries. He needs literally hundreds of pounds. Mike is working on a new watermelon wine which should be out sometime soon,” Sandra Pell said.

Sometimes the Pells’ daughter Mandara Vance and daughter and son-in-law, Alyson, and Thomas White help out. Vance has her Moonchild collection of luxury soaps and lotions and other items for sale at the winery.

“She creates homemade luxury soaps with the most precious of oils and butters. Some of her followers on YouTube have said her soaps are some of the best in the world they have tried,” Sandra Pell said.

Sweet Dreams Winery is open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. A band  provides live music from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.

“Come sit and relax on the porch or patio, enjoy the country atmosphere and enjoy some delicious peach bellini’s or winearitas. Or just have a glass or bottle of wine,” Sandra Pell said.

The winery also offers a simple sandwich selection or guests may bring their own food to cook on the barbecue patio.

“If you like sweet wines, this is the place for you,” Sandra Pell said.
