A 30-year-old Palestine man whom authorities have described as a known trafficker of illegal narcotics has been reindicted on a charge of possessing cocaine with the intent to deliver more than two years ago.

Raymond Torres Jr., 30, of Palestine recently was indicted by an Anderson County grand jury on the charge of possession of a controlled substance between 4 and 200 grams with the intent to deliver.

The recent indictment was a reindictment of an earlier case filed against Torres relating to a drug arrest on Texas 19 on the night of Feb. 13, 2004.

On that day, Palestine police say they received information from a credible source that Torres was transporting 2 ounces of cocaine into the city from the Dallas area.

At the time, then-Palestine Assistant Police Chief Mike Medders said officers set up “surveillance” on Texas 19 North and ultimately stopped a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse in which Torres was riding as a passenger.

During a search, authorities say they found 2 ounces of a white powdery substance in Torres’ possession. The substance subsequently field tested positive for cocaine.

Police have described Torres as a known trafficker of illegal narcotics who sometimes carries weapons and displays “combative” behavior.
