A parade, arts and crafts, children’s games and entertainment is on tap for the annual Neches Heritage Day festival set Saturday on the Neches Community Center grounds.

“We want everyone to come out and enjoy the day, visiting with their friends and neighbors,” Neches Heritage Day committee president Pat Grounds said. ‘We will have all kinds of arts and crafts booths and a few free children’s games.”

The day will kick off at 10 a.m. with a parade through Neches ending on the community center grounds where the festival will continue. Parade grand marshals will be Neches ISD administration. Theme is “Education: The Key.” Prizes will be given for the best floats: $100, first place; $50, second place; $25, third place. The Palestine Wildcat Marching Band drum corp is planning to participate.

More than eight food booths will be featured at the festival, including the Neches Volunteer Fire Department’s annual barbecue.

The East Texas Ramblers will provide musical entertainment. The Kinder girls also will be on the program and the 2010 Dogwood Queen Ashley Conner will attend. The Cherokee Cloggers will give a clogging demonstration. The Neches High School girls basketball team will be presented with a plaque for winning the Class A, Division II state championship.

For the first year, an Ugly Truck Contest will be held featuring a trophy and a $100 cash prize for first place (the truck judged to have the least show room shine). Second place will receive $50. Vehicles entered in the Ugly Truck Contest must be under its own power during the parade. Contestants must report to the parade area at least 30 minutes prior to parade start for registration. A cake-bake will be held with judging based on taste and appearance. Ribbons will be presented to the winners. For information, call Sherry Hester at 903-729-5167.

A bounce house also will be set up for children.

Booth spaces are available for $10 for a 10x20 space. Booth space for non-profit organizations is free. For arts & crafts booth space, call Elaine Huddleston at 903-584-3410.

Drawings will be held for a Marlin 243 rifle with Nikon scope and for a Wii game system. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
