ELKHART — Last year, there were no varsity girls' basketball games for Elkhart, rather the school played a junior varsity schedule.

Elkhart has resumed varsity games this season under first-year head coach Alie Decker, a former Oklahoma scholastic and West Texas A&M standout.

“It's both a new experience for the girls, and for me,” said Decker. “It's been a learning curve. We have no seniors. Learning has been fun and exciting for them, and they get to play varsity.”

Decker said Elkhart played better during the second half of Friday's District 20-3A loss to Groesbeck.

“We had better ball movement and better reads on defense,” Decker said. “The girls were in the correct rotation.”

Groesbeck bolted to a 37-10 halftime lead, and the Lady Goats eventually won the game 58-20 — but, it's a matter of playing time right now for Elkhart.

There were only six girls out for basketball during the 2017-18 season.

Five girls on the roster — Lynsie Walding, Brandi Cain, Laci McEnrturff, Haleigh Chapin and Alaina Canaday — all scored four points versus Groesbeck.

Elkhart hasn't won a district game yet (6-12, 0-4), but the team has made some strides since Decker took over the program.

Decker said she's enjoying the experience as well.

Alie canned 208 3-pointers in a four-year career at both West Texas A&M and Wichita State Universities.

Decker played for a state championship as a senior in high school, as her alma mater Edmond (Okla.) Memorial lost to in-town rival Edmond Santa Fe, 44-41, and she was a McDonald's All-American nominee.

Last season, Decker served as a graduate assistant women’s basketball coach at WTAMU.
