NECHES — The Slocum High School girls' basketball team has been able to win defensive-minded games this season.
Friday was no different as the Lady Mustangs topped Neches 39-31 in a non-district contest at Neches High School.
Slocum held the Lady Tigers to four first-quarter points, and the Lady Mustangs were ahead 24-14 at intermission. They were able to remain in front of Neches in the second half to win.
Gina Lively paced all scorers with 17 points, including five 3-pointers and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. Bella McNeill tossed in eight points as a complement to Lively.
Kacie Kimbrough was the lone Neches player to score in double digits with 10, including 4-of-6 on free throws. Lexi Rogers and Makenzie Hudson both had seven points, including one trey apiece.
Slocum and Neches each stand at 16-6, and both schools will play tonight.
Slocum is home for a District 20-2A girls/boys doubleheader with Groveton; meanwhile, Neches travels to Jewett for another non-district game, this time with Leon.
The Palestine High School girls open District 19-4A action tonight playing rival Fairfield, beginning with the sub-varsity games at 5 p.m.

Crockett visits Westwood while Elkhart travels to Frankston in District 20-3A.
The Cayuga girls travel to District 19-2A foe Itasca while the boys play host to Jewett Leon. The Wildcat boys won't start 19-2A action until Friday.
Grapeland plays at Centerville in District 20-2A, with the girls' game shaping up to be quite entertaining between state-ranked squads.
In competitive District 28-1A, Oakwood will play at Laneville — no girls’ game — and LaPoynor travels to Chireno. The Neches boys play a non-district game at Kerens to wrap up tonight's slate.
