GROESBECK — Colby Thornton dropped in 24 points, including 3-of-4 from the free-throw line and one 3-pointer, as the Slocum High School boys' basketball team advanced to the Conference 2A-Region III quarterfinals with a 63-37 victory over Rosebud-Lott.
The Mustangs improved to 20-12, and they will face District 20-2A rival Lovelady for the third time tonight.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Angelina College in Lufkin.
Josh Ives added 14 points, which included four 3-pointers, and Travis Neal also dropped in 14 points.
Slocum was up double digits at halftime (30-16) and by 20 points after three periods (49-29) en route to the victory.
Neches 53, Iredell 34
RICE — Neches' Bryson Barrett tossed in a game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Tigers walloped Iredell by 19 points at Rice High School in the Conference 1A-Region IV area round on Friday.
D.J. Barrett also played well for Neches, with 14 points with two 3-pointers and two free throws.
The Tigers' defense held Iredell to four second-quarter points en route to the victory.
Neches (23-12) plays Coolidge at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the quarterfinals at Fairfield High School.
Oakwood 58, Calvert 42
GROESBECK — Three different Oakwood played netted double-digit points as the Panthers downed Calvert by 16 points in the Conference 1A-Region IV quarterfinals.
Jerimiah Sargent had 16 points, included two 3-pointers, Tuddy Jones added 14 and Trisdon Bynum 13 for the Panthers. Jones and Bynum both were 3-of-4 from the foul line.
The Panthers (17-6) pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Calvert 21-9.
Oakwood will play District 28-1A rival LaPoynor (28-4) in the 1A-Region IV quarterfinals tonight in rural Malakoff at Cross Roads. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
