Palestine boys’ soccer Javier Leonor, shown here from a 2018 file photo versus Mineola, returned to the pitch on Friday night. Leonor had both a goal and an assist as Conference 4A No. 1 Palestine topped Conference 5A No. 9 Mount Pleasant 3-2 on Friday. 

MOUNT PLEASANT — Welcome back to the lineup, Palestine High School boys' soccer player Javier Leonor.

Leonor tallied Palestine's second goal of the game, which leveled the score at 2-all, on a feed from teammate Yoriel Reyes.

Will James then netted the game-winner off a Leonor corner kick as Conference 4A No. 1 ranked Palestine defeated 5A No. 9 Mount Pleasant 3-2.

The Tigers had forged ahead 2-1, including a goal off a penalty kick.

Jose Sanchez scored the Wildcats' first goal off a feed from Jonathan Sanchez.

Palestine (15-0-2) will travel to play 4A No. 7 Kilgore this Friday. Varsity first kick is set for 7 p.m.

In the junior varsity match, Palestine defeated Mount Pleasant, 2-1, with goals from Raul Ramirez. Luis Castillo and Michael Chaidez provided the assists.

Palestine girls

HENDERSON — Henderson blanked the visiting Palestine girls 3-0, dropping the LadyCats to 5-6-5 on the season.

Palestine JV topped Henderson, 3-2, as Jennifer Rodriguez scored twice and Mia Ramirez also had a goal for the LadyCats. Anahi Hernandez, Ali Sanchez and Karina Gutierrez all were credited with assists.

Palestine is off this week, giving the team plenty of time to prepare for the District 18-4A opener at Crockett on Feb. 12.

The junior varsity girls play tonight at Madisonville.

Westwood girls

Diboll scored the game's only goal in the second half as the Lady Lumberjacks nipped homestanding Westwood 1-0 at Panther Stadium on Friday.

Ashlyn Jones was in net for Westwood (0-7-1) for the entire 80 minutes.

Westwood is home tonight for a girls/boys doubleheader versus Tenaha.

The girls' match is set for 5:30 p.m., with the boys to follow.
