The Elkhart girls’ tennis team, along with the Frankston boys’ squad, won the District 21-2A championships Thursday at Jacksonville High School.

The Elkhart girls’ team won the district title with 25 points while Frankston finished second with 14 points and Malakoff and Grapeland tied for third with 12 points each.

In girls’ singles finals, Frankston’s Alex Till defeated Malakoff’s April Carroll 7-5, 6-3 and both tennis players will advance to the Class 2A-Region III tournament as the top two finishers in each division advance.

The regional tournament will be held April 26 and 27 and Tyler Junior College.

Elkhart’s Claire Cooper took third place in girls’ singles.

Elkhart’s Kayla Herring and Melissa Mendiola will advance to regionals as the duo defeated Grapeland’s Mollie Bennett and Courtney Dorsey 6-1, 6-2 in the girls’ doubles finals.

Elkhart also took third place in girls’ doubles with Kristen Blake and Sarah Farley.

The Frankston boys’ won the district title with 24 points and Elkhart was second with 21 points.

In boys’ singles it was an all-Frankston final as Chris O’Dell topped Stephen Murphy 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The boys’ doubles final was an all-Elkhart matchup as the combination of Micah Blackmon and Dustin Wilson defeated Marcus Helm and Josh Yeager 6-1, 6-1.

Frankston’s Tanner Welch and Jace White took third place.

In a new event, mixed doubles, Elkhart’s Jordan Farley and Janae Lock took third place.
