The Westwood softball team bounced back from Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to Madisonville with an important, 4-2 win over Fairfield Thursday.
The win was a big one for the Lady Panthers because it came over the fourth-place Lady Eagles, and with only three games left to play gives Westwood a two-game lead in the standings.
Lexy McGuire struck out four in her complete game win, including one to end the game with the bases full of Lady Eagles.
Both Alex El-Cassabgui and Trista Fields finished 3-for-4, with El-Cassabgui logging a triple.
Courtney Stanhope finished 2-for-4.
Westwood (5-2 in district) travels to district-leading Groesbeck at 6 p.m. Monday.
ELKHART 6, Arp 2
Catie Bridges pitched a complete game, and Robin Grant had three hits at the Elkhart softball team topped Arp, 6-2, Thursday.
Grant knocked in a run and scored another in the win, while Alicia Lipscomb and Sheridan Adair both had two hit nights, each with a a double. Lipscomb also scored twice.
The win improves the Lady Elks to 14-10 overall and 6-3 in district play. Elkhart is back in action Friday in Frankston.
H.S. TRACK & FIELD
Neches sending 7 to area
Seven Neches boys’ track athletes are headed to Thursday’s area meet in Fairfield, including all three of the Tigers’ relay teams.
Brandon Barrett is personally competing in five events at area after winning the long jump and the 200-meter dash at the district meet, as well as running on the gold medal winning 800-meter relay team along with John Colon, Jasper Henderson and Juan Hernandez.
That same team also finished second in the 400-meter relay, while the mile relay team of Henderson, Hernandez, Trey Larson and Nathan Lightell won its relay.
Barrett also finished third in the high jump.
Lightell also won the 110-meter hurdles and finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, while Larson was fourth in the 110s.
Matthew McLaughlin finished third in the 3,200 meters.
The top-four finishers in the district meet advance to the area event.
