With summer starting soon, the YMCA Piranhas swim team is recruiting members through next Friday, May 24. Tryouts are open to swimmers, ages 5 to 18. Registration fees are $175 for Y members, $200 for non-members.

The team typically includes 20-30 members each season. Members must be able to swim the length of the pool, or 100 yards, above water, Coach Kathrine Newton said.

Costs cover registrations for the East Texas Summer Swim League, entry fees for each of the five meets, and a team T-shirt and cap.

Practices begin June 3, with Advanced Team practice 7:15-9 a.m., and Novice Team practice 11 a.m. to noon. Practices run Monday-Thursday, through July 18.

A former high school swimmer, Newton began coaching for the YMCA 11 years ago; she's earned two swim instructor certifications. She also coached Palestine High School's Wildcat Swim Team in 2018-2019, its first season.
